6 6 Pillars of Faith

The Six Pillars of Islam

  1. Shahada (Faith)
Shahada means to believe in only one God, Allah, and that Muhammad is His Prophet. This is the first and most important pillar. A Muslim must say, “There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is His messenger.”
  2. Salat (Prayer)
Muslims pray five times every day. They pray in the morning, noon, afternoon, evening, and night. Prayer is a way to remember and talk to Allah.
  3. Zakat (Charity)
Muslims must give some of their money to help poor people. It teaches kindness and caring for others. Zakat makes the community strong.
  4. Sawm (Fasting in Ramadan)
Muslims fast during the month of Ramadan. They do not eat or drink from sunrise to sunset. Fasting teaches patience and helps Muslims feel what poor people feel.
  5. Hajj (Pilgrimage to Mecca)
If a Muslim has enough money and is healthy, they must go to Mecca at least once in their life. This is called Hajj. It happens once a year and is a special journey.
  6. Jihad (Struggle or Effort)
Jihad means to try hard to be a good Muslim. It can mean fighting bad behavior, helping others, or protecting Islam in peaceful ways. It is not always about war.
